Holidays During Term Time

The School Education Act 1999 requires parents to ensure that children of compulsory school age attend school on each day that the school is open for instruction.

If you advise us that your child/children will be going on holidays during term time, this will be noted in lesson attendance as a notified but unauthorised absence.

Please be aware that teachers are not required to provide work for students with an unauthorised absence, this includes short or long term absences.

If you have any queries regarding this matter, please feel free to contact Dale Mackesey (Principal) 9438 700 or email him dale.mackesey@education.wa.edu.au

Students on School Grounds

I have spoken to the students this week about not accessing the school grounds without an adult on the weekends. Unfortunately, we have had some anti-social behaviour and vandalism to the property over the past month caused by older children. I did reinforce that families are encouraged to use the grounds after hours. If you do see anti-social behaviour occurring when you are here, do not hesitate calling Education Department Security on 9264 4632.

STEAM Week

In Room 13, students have been actively exploring the captivating world of light reflection for during their science lessons and for STEAM week. By crafting periscopes from everyday materials such as paper, sticky tape, glue, and mirrors, students have gained hands-on experience that deepens their grasp of light behaviour. This periscope project serves as a practical gateway to understanding physical light concepts, enabling students to manipulate mirrors and observe light reflection, along with the emergence of shadows. Their engagement with periscopes has enriched their comprehension of how light interacts with surfaces. Furthermore, students have enthusiastically posed inquiries about the impact of angles and mirrors on light reflection. They have formulated predictions about periscope functionality and proceeded to investigate using various light sources, fostering inquiry-driven learning and honing critical thinking skills.

STEAM Room 2 : Bees

During this term we are learning about bees- food production (honey, royal jelly and wax), care for bees both European and native species (lifecycle, hive/nests, bee gardens and bee hotels for native bees) and our impact on the health of bees in our environment (chemicals, habitat destruction and virus/mites/colony collapse).

For our assembly, we made anatomically correct bees out of egg cartons- three egg carton body parts, six pipe cleaner legs, four cellophane wings, two pipe cleaner antennas and sticker eyes.

As this was created for a particular occasion, the bees were basically the same structure. I wrote a procedural text for the children to work through outlining step by step instructions that the children continually referred to as they created their bees.

Later this term, we will discuss what bees need to thrive and plan individual gardens using grid paper to include different aspects to promote honey production (basins/shallow dishes of water, grass to rest in, plants that flower throughout the year to support honey production, chemical free gardens- companion planting, natural pesticides, promoting natural predators into the garden e.g. ladybirds).

To complete the topic, the children will create a bee hotel using recycling materials from their yellow recycling bins. The hotels will be placed into trees around the Year 1 classrooms, and we will observe what insects/mini beasts move in.

STEAM IN PP1

Every kid starts out as a natural born scientist – Carl Sagan

Children in PP1 have been engaging in STEAM activities (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths) We listened to the story “The Three Billy Goats Gruff’ and we talked about how the goats got to the other side. Children worked in partners to design a bridge. They were given a bundle of material which included two cups, straws, one piece of cardboard and some pipe cleaners. They were also given scissors and masking tape with the task of building a bridge which would hold three plastic goats on it without collapsing.

After the build, we tested each bridge. We started off by putting one goat on at a time. Two of our bridges were able to hold all three goats and one bridge could hold four! We then analysed what made the designs stronger and many of us chose to build a second stronger bridge, using the knowledge we had gained.

Richmond Canteen Menu – Aug 24, 2023

The P&C have had to make the difficult decision to raise prices of some canteen menu items, this is due to increased supply costs.

The new menu will be made available on the school website, Monday 21st of August. Prices will come into effect on Wednesday 24th August 2023.
