Newsletter Term 4 Week 3

Grandparents Day

One of my many pleasures in my role is observing the many grandparents dropping off and picking up students daily. Grandparent Day has been celebrated this year with the Pre-Primary assembly, which was loved by all who attended. The costumes were superb, and the assembly showed the connection between grandparents and grandchildren. It is a little confronting when I meet with grandparents who are I my age bracket and hopefully it will be few more years before I am attending s similar celebration.

Congratulations Grace Lowing

Grace was one of 25 students across the state who won a 2023 NAIDOC Medal of Excellence. Our sensational Room 10 students entered the competition as part of the NAIDOC Week which is a significant part of the Reconciliation Plan. Well done to all our students who entered, and our thanks go out to Mrs Moore.

Friends of Cantonment Hill

Cantonment Hill is the bushland reserve just above the old traffic bridge at the entry to Fremantle. Our community group, “Friends of Cantonment Hill” works very hard to care for this bushland, and were instrumental in the development of the playground that is now there on Tuckfield Street, but we realise that many Fremantle residents don’t know where the bushland is, or of its significance. To this end, we have created an educational tool, a beautiful counting book which will appeal to young children. Fremantle Ports have funded the printing of these books, in hard-back, so that we can donate copies to all Kindergarten and Pre-school children in the City of Fremantle.

At today’s assembly Josephine Clarke spoke about on behalf of Friends of Cantonment Hill about the importance of the bushland and the work of the group. Our students from K & PP will receive a complimentary copy of the book. Our thanks go out to Friends of Cantonment Hill and would encourage parents to follow their great work on Facebook.

Teachers Appreciation Day

Thank you to our school community for your kindness and thoughtfulness for all of us. We enjoyed our morning tea with the most amazing cakes, slices, and savories. As well as all the beautiful flowers and cards.

Reminder Art Room Open Afternoon

Monday 13th November and Tuesday 14th November

New Drink Fountains

New bubblers have finally been installed and will be operational next week. The older brick fountain has been decommissioned and will be removed in the near future.

Oval

I have received a number of queries about the poor condition, which has been problematic since it was installed at the beginning of 2022. The problems are related to Sting Nematodes, Ground Pearl and irrigation and the school has been actively and consistently seeking support to return the oval to a fit for purpose area.

We received word that the ongoing issues with the oval have been prioritised and we are now a case study for turf pests within the Department. The turf will be replaced with a different turf species with independent project management, maintenance program and ongoing monitoring for 24 months. The work will be scheduled for the holiday period and will be fully funded by the department. Our thanks go out to a very tenacious Manager of Corporate Services for reinforcing the words in our school song ‘Never Give Up”.

Artist in Residence

The outgoing Yr 6 students raised funds earlier in the year to purchase a gift for the school under the umbrella of the P&C. A decision was made to commission a local artist Amanda Hart to paint a mural with the assistance of some Yr 6 students and the work will commence next week. Amanda will be working on the veranda outside the library with the project anticipated to take a week. The completed mural will be installed later in the year.

Change in OSHC Provider

As per Department policy we were required to review our OSHC provision this year, a tender process was entered into, and we approached many OSHC providers to submit a proposal for providing care at Richmond.  After careful consideration and evaluation of all submissions, we are excited to announce that from January 2024 Care for Kids will be operating before and after school care at Richmond and we look forward to welcoming them into the community.  Care for Kids are a family run business who are looking forward to meeting families and providing care for your children from next year.  Future newsletters will contain more information as we get closer to the end of term, we will let you know when information is on our website and when flyers will be available at the front office, please be assured that this will be smooth transition with no disruption for families during the change.  But for now, here’s an introduction from them….
