Principal’s Update

Athletics Carnival

We managed to dodge most of the rain drops on Tuesday and students were able to complete the jumps and throws events. The clouds parted for what was a fantastic carnival on Friday, with the students being well led by the House Captains. The students competed well and reflected all the Richmond Values. What a great atmosphere! Congratulations to Fraser House for their mammoth 1150.5 point effort.  Well done to Osborne on 1111.5 points and Windsor on 1077 points. Thank you to Mr Thorogood and Mr Carder for all their careful and considered planning to get the two events up and running.  We would also like to thank the Melville Senior High School students, and parent volunteers for their help on Tuesday.  Today, we had yet another amazing turnout of parent volunteers; without your assistance the day wouldn’t have been as successful as it was.

We would also like to thank Ros Christian for coming along to present the Eric Christian Shield for the Most Improved Athlete.

We all look forward to the interschool athletics early next term.

Day of Mourning

The Prime Minister has announced a public holiday as a National Day of Mourning for the late Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday 22 September.  Please note: The school will be closed.

Trees

Sadly, over the past few days we have had to say goodbye to some of our very old and much-loved trees on our school grounds, and are seeing others being lifted or pruned.  These works have been done in response to an extensive DOE Arborist Report which deemed the removed trees as being in very poor condition and at risk of collapse. We will have a tree planting ceremony later in the year.

Undercover Area Flooring

We are delighted to announce that the undercover area resurfacing has been completed this week.  The Techlay rubber tiles will be much more comfortable for students and staff and will reduce the noise pollution in that area, which I’m sure Mr Thorogood will be thankful for!

Our thanks go to OSH Club for their extremely generous donation towards the cost of this project.  As the undercover area is the main venue within the school for OSH Club, this will be of great benefit for the students who get to use it before and after school.

We still have plenty of RATS (nasal swabs) available from the front office.

Unfortunately, we can’t give them to students to bring home and they will need to be collected by an adult.

Footy Colours Day Fundraiser

Friday 23 September is the year 4 assembly and Footy Colours Day Fundraiser.

Please dress in your favourite team colours and bring along a gold coin donation. Funds raised go to the Fight Cancer Foundation.

Yaakin – Pronounced ‘Yark In’

Yaakin means Turtle.

Turtles are a favoured food source for Indigenous communities and therefore appear as totems and in Dreamtime stories and Creation myths. Indigenous people respect the food resources that sustain them and they celebrate the turtle in rituals that aim to increase the bounty of the species.
