Principal’s Update

The sun is shining, and all the students have returned a little taller with stories of their holidays to a variety of destinations.  It’s hard to believe that we have already completed Week 1. This is going to be another very busy term with the school calendar updated on the website on a weekly basis. There are a number of incursions and excursions coming up and also many community events planned, starting with the Dad and Kids Camp run by the DORK’s scheduled for this weekend. Planning is also underway for a Disco later this month, with information being sent out later.  Our year 6 students have a very exciting final term ahead at Richmond, with a full program including Camp and Graduation.

Parent Information Sessions

I will be running information sessions on Thursday 27  October.

We will discuss what’s happening this term, school planning and any Q&A about any aspect of the school.

This is open to Class Reps or any interested parents.

The sessions will be at 8.50 -9.30 am or 2.20 – 3.00 pm.

Please email richmond.ps@education.wa.edu.au) or call Lara on 9438 8700 to book your spot.

Class Placements

The class distribution will be considered based on student numbers with anticipated enrolments increasing in 2023, with more students moving into our school catchment.  The distribution for the class numbers may change each year according to numbers in the school and the effects of different numbers in each class or year group.

Richmond PS creates its class structure based on the professional judgement of staff considering the students’ academic, social and emotional needs.

Factors influencing class structure are:

• the educational needs of the students

• the projected number of students in each year level

• the ratio of girls to boys

• projected enrolments during the year based on past trends

• the number of teachers employed at the school

• the constraints of resources and facilities.

Factors which are considered in the placement of students include:

• academic performance

• work habits e.g., ability to work independently

• behaviour

• gender

• social network

• social maturity

• special needs e.g., twins, siblings

Classes are not streamed. Should there be more than one class in a particular year level, or the need to form a split grade class, the professional judgement of the Principal, Administration team and relevant teaching staff from the previous year will decide the placement of individual students.

Parent input regarding their child’s educational needs will be considered.

Requests in relation to choice of teacher will not be considered as a placement factor.

Students Leaving in 2023

Please could you notify Lara – richmond.ps@education.wa.edu.au or on 9438 8700 if any of your children currently in years K – 5 will be leaving Richmond PS at the end of this year.

Gardening Crew

Thanks to Azita for organising the Clean-up Crew during the holidays.

Girls Multi Sport on Thursday

On Thursday 13October, 28 year 4, 5 and 6 girls were selected to compete in a multi sports day event. The girls played, cricket, AFL football and netball in round robin event. The events were supported by Perth Fever, Fremantle Dockers AFLW, South and East Fremantle Football Clubs, and WA cricket.  This was a fantastic opportunity for the girls to have a go at a sport they may have previously had no experience with. The girls showed great grit and resilience in tackling each of the sports. The day started with a few nerves and playing sports that were previously unfamiliar to them. However, it ended with lots of joy and a real sense of achievement. Thank you to Simone and Carissa our wonderful parent helpers and Mrs Holst- Marsh for assisting with team management. A big thank you to Mr Thorogood for organising this opportunity for our Richmond kids to participate. Not only did the girls come away with a strong sense of personal achievement but they also won the Fremantle Dockers…. Award.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Assemblies

This term we will be trialling a new assembly format.  We will have the usual whole school assemblies on Fridays in weeks 4, 6, and 8, and the final assembly on Wednesday 14 December.

Also, we will be having mini assemblies rather than whole school assemblies in weeks 2, 3 and 5. Students will have the opportunity to receive their value award in a more personalised setting.

Format of the new Mini Assemblies

At 8.30 am, parents/guardians (will be invited) and value award winners will meet in the library (Before school) with the principal or deputy and student leaders.

Acknowledgement of Country

Value Awards are read in full

Parents will have an opportunity to engage with the principal or deputy and we can take photos which include family members.

Students receiving awards on these days will be acknowledged publicly via the school newsletter and/or via the PA.  We will seek permission from parents on the day regarding your preference for photos and names being published.

Magpies Swooping

(AAP Image/Victoria Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning)

It’s that time of year again; when going to the park, walking to school or walking amongst the trees becomes a little more hazardous as nesting magpies defend their territory. Please follow the link Magpie Season – Classroom – BTN (abc.net.au) to watch a short video to find out more about why magpies swoop and how you can protect yourself.

End of COVID Transition (Testing and Isolation) Directions (From the Dept of Education WA

Following an agreement at National Cabinet, the requirement for COVID-19 positive cases and their close contacts to isolate has been removed.

Anyone who is COVID-19 positive or experiencing symptoms is strongly encouraged to stay home until they have recovered.

COVID-19 positive cases or close contacts cannot visit public hospitals for 7 days.

Other rules may apply to high-risk settings, including private hospitals, aged care and disability care facilities. Each facility is able to determine their own isolation requirements, so speak to the relevant facility for more information.

It is important to continue healthy hygiene habits, including:

  • Washing or sanitising hands regularly
  • Wearing masks if required, if unwell, or if in crowded indoor spaces where you cannot physically distance
  • Staying up to date with vaccinations
  • Testing for COVID-19 if experiencing symptoms and staying home until symptoms resolve

The WA free RAT program continues to provide quick and effective COVID-19 tests to the community.

Free RATs are available at the school office.

Look after your work colleagues

If you have had close contact with someone who has COVID-19, there are simple steps you can take to reduce the risk to others:

Monitor for COVID-like symptoms. If you get sick, get tested and stay home. Even if you test negative to COVID-19, stay home until your symptoms resolve so you don’t spread any infection.

Don’t visit people at high risk of severe illness for 7 days.

Wear a mask as necessary.

Frequent rapid antigen testing (RAT) may help identify COVID-19 early – this is particularly important if you are in contact with people at high risk of severe illness.

The fact we are continuing to transition out of COVID-19 response measures is great news for us all.

However we must be mindful that COVID-19 remains in the community and can be very dangerous for some people.

Taking personal responsibility and continuing the safety protocols even though they are now not mandatory help keep your family, friends and colleagues safe.

For the latest information visit WA.gov.au

Please be advised that we have had several notifications of COVID in the school community this week.
