Principal’s Update

This week we’ve welcomed a family of Tawney Frogmouth Owls to the school. Their antics are proving to be a big hit with students, teachers and parents.

I’ve received an email from a colleague about the conduct of the students who represented Richmond PS at the recent basketball competition. He commented on the way how well trained our students were and the respect and courtesy they demonstrated at the tournament. Thank you to Mr Thorogood and Mr Townsend for the preparation, and to our parent volunteers. One of the teams is into the championship play-offs later in the term.

We have also received a few nominations for Aussie of the Month from members of the community, highlighting Richmond Students demonstrating civic responsibility. If you would like to nominate a student, please send through an email to Lara or myself.

Kambarang – Pronounced Kum Bur Rung

Kambarang is the 6th Noongar Season (October – November)

This means, longer dry periods and fewer cold fronts crossing the coast and the height of the wildflower season.

Traditionally it’s a time when Noongar moved towards the coast where frogs, tortoises and freshwater crayfish were caught.

The Dads and Kids Camp

The Dad and Kids Camp was a big success last weekend.
We had 95 dads and 155 kids attend and join in with the fun and games.

Several students have commented on how great it was to stay up late. They particularly enjoyed the scavenger hunt with lollies and glow sticks as prizes.

If you are a dad or a dad figure for any of our Richmond students, we would be happy to welcome you to join in with DoRKs (Dads of Richmond Kids) events. Please click on the following link for more information. Dads of Richmond Kids – Richmond Primary School (richmondps.wa.edu.au)

Congratulations and Thank You to the Williams Family

Frankie W from Year 3 will be presented with an award at the 2022 Premier’s Reading Challenge Awards Presentation at Parliament House next Wednesday.

Encouraged by her Mum, Frankie completed the challenge by reading at least 12 books by 9 September 2022. Her favourite author is Thea Stilton because she has books with descriptive words. Frankie loves to read in bed as it relaxes her before going to sleep.

Thanks also to Charlie from Year 1 and the Williams family for donating some fantastic sporting equipment for our students to enjoy at school.

Congratulations also goes out to Sophie Eastaugh (former student) who is now captaining the U19 Australian Netball Team.

Class Placements  – Reminder

The class distribution will be considered based on student numbers with anticipated enrolments increasing in 2023, with more students moving into our school catchment. The distribution for the class numbers may change each year according to numbers in the school and the effects of different numbers in each class or year group.

Richmond PS creates its class structure based on the professional judgement of staff considering the student’s academic, social and emotional needs.

Factors influencing class structure are:

• the educational needs of the students

• the projected number of students in each year level

• the ratio of girls to boys

• projected enrolments during the year based on past trends

• the number of teachers employed at the school

• the constraints of resources and facilities.

Factors which are considered in the placement of students include:

• academic performance

• work habits e.g., the ability to work independently

• behaviour

• gender

• social network

• social maturity

• special needs e.g., twins, siblings

Classes are not streamed. Should there be more than one class in a particular year level, or the need to form a split grade class, the professional judgement of the Principal, Administration team and relevant teaching staff from the previous year will decide the placement of individual students.

Parent input regarding their child’s educational needs will be considered.

Requests concerning choice of teacher will not be considered as a placement factor.
