Henry’s ANZAC Memorial Service Speech
Good morning everyone,
Over 100 years have passed since the brave soldiers, known as the Anzacs, arrived on their boats at Anzac Cove in Gallipoli in 1915.
Every year on the 25th of April, our country recognises this courageous and selfless act, on one if its most important days – ANZAC Day.
As the years have passed since that fateful landing on the shores of Gallipoli many years ago, ANZAC Day has evolved into a day on which we are able to show our recognition, gratitude and pay our respects to the service men and women who have fought for our country in ALL wars and conflicts since.
This tradition of gathering together in the memory and honour of all the people who have served our country is firmly embedded in our history and culture. It is because of these brave, selfless men and women that we are all able live a peaceful and prosperous life here in Australia today.
And this is the very reason why it is so important that we remember the ANZACS and that we remember all of those who have served for our country.
It is up to ALL of us to keep the Anzac spirit and memory alive.
And there are a number of ways in which we do this.
We hold memorial services, such as this one we are attending here today, we participate in parades and marches through cities and towns across our country, we gather together at local venues to share stories, memories and to show our support to those affected by war.
And of course, the strong tradition of the dawn service, with the solemn and moving sound of the bugle playing the last post.
Alongside all of these traditions and rituals, are three powerful words.
And they are: Lest We Forget.
These words represent what brings people together at Anzac day and
although these words may be small in size, they are huge in meaning.
When we say – lest we forget, we make a promise to ourselves and to each other, that no matter how many years and generations go by, that we will remember them.
Lest We Forget.
Ava’s ANZAC Memorial Service Speech
On this day 108 years ago, Australia was eight months into the First World War and there were only 19 days remaining before Australian soldiers would storm the beach of Gallipoli. World War 1 began on July 28th 1914 and Australia and New Zealand quickly joined the war effort in early August.
At this time Australia had only been an official country for 14 years and people felt very strongly about proving themselves to not only their country but to the entire world. They were excited about the chance to fight for the freedom of Australia. They had no idea how difficult or dangerous the war really was.
On the 25th April 1915 Australian soldiers first landed on the beach of Gallipoli in Turkey. It was just before dawn so it would have been dark and very quiet. Hundreds of men sitting in their boats waiting silently for the signal to attack. The Australians were the first to land and the New Zealand soldiers would follow later in the day.
On that first day around 2000 Australians were killed or wounded and over the 8 months that the battle lasted more than 11,000 people died and 23,500 were wounded.
ANZAC comes from the abbreviation of Australian and New Zealand Army “Core”. This is how people who fought in the battle of Gallipoli came to be known as the ANZACS and the beach is now known as ANZAC cove.
As the years have gone on, Anzac Day has expanded to include remembrance of people who fought in World War 2, the Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War and other campaigns. We recognize the contributions of all people who have lived through conflict.
On Anzac Day we remember all the soldiers who fought in the war, both those who came back and those who did not. This ceremony today is to remember these brave people, show our appreciation of the sacrifices they made and honour the values of the Anzacs. Take these values-loyalty, selflessness and courage- as you live in freedom and safety today and remember the ANZACS.

Special mention also to Hamish (Sam’s dad) for organising a tremendous training session for the squad.
