The Environment

Waste Wise School

Richmond PS has been a Waste Wise accredited school every year since 2011, and in 2016 was ‘highly commended’ in the Infinity Awards, recognising innovation and excellence in recycling and waste reduction.

Recycling

Students recycle paper, cardboard, batteries, mobile phones, plastic and toner cartridges. Food scraps go to the school’s compost bins and worm farm to be used in the kitchen garden.  Students are encouraged to bring waste free lunches and reusable water bottles and the canteen tries to avoid plastic packaging.  Our 2018 waste audit indicated that just 1% of our waste is plastic.  Our current target is for all students to bring waste free lunches to school every day and to put all fruit and vegetable waste into our compost bin.

We have a recycled uniform system led by our student environmental team.  Please donate your good used items that are too small to the office.  Recycled items are sold on assembly mornings in the undercover area for a gold coin donation, which goes to the P&C.

FOGO Bins

We follow the FOGO bin system as implemented by the Town of East Fremantle.  All students are taught how to use the red, yellow and lime council bins. We also have blue bins in which we recycle paper.

Gardening Club

The school has a popular gardening club which runs a ‘seed to plate’ program from their kitchen garden. Children are hands-on with planting and caring for fruit, vegetables and herbs, harvesting, cooking and sharing delicious, healthy food.
